The short version

We never sell your personal information. We share it with Michael's campaign team and with the service providers who run our forms, email, and advertising — and where the law requires it, including Ontario's public reporting rules for campaign contributions.
We collect the information you give us through our forms — things like your name, email, phone number, address, and messages you send — plus basic technical information from your visit.
We use it to reply to you, organize volunteers and events, keep you updated about the campaign, and target and measure our advertising.
We use standard cookies and tracking tools, including Google Analytics and the Meta (Facebook and Instagram) pixel.
We may keep your contact information after the election, including to reach you as a Huntsville resident if Michael is elected, unless you ask us to stop.
You can ask us to correct or delete your information, or to stop contacting you, at any time through our contact page.

This Privacy Policy explains how Michael Ankenmann (the "Campaign," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards your information when you visit michaelankenmann.ca (the "Site"), submit one of our forms on the site or elsewhere, sign up for updates, volunteer, endorse, donate, or otherwise interact with us online or offline.

By using the Site or providing us with your information, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the Site or submit information to us.

Who we are

We are a local municipal election campaign based in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada. We are not a business and we do not sell products or services through this Site. Questions about this Policy or about the personal information we hold can be sent through our contact page.

Information we collect

Information you give us

When you fill out a form, send us a message, sign up for updates, offer to volunteer, submit an endorsement, request a lawn sign, or contribute to the campaign, we may collect:

Your name;
Your email address;
Your phone number;
Your mailing or street address, postal code, and ward or neighbourhood;
The content of your message, questions, comments, endorsement text, or the issues and priorities you tell us matter to you;
Your availability, skills, and interests if you volunteer;
Contribution details, including amount and date, if you donate;
Technical information captured with your submission, including your IP address, the date and time you submitted, the page you submitted from, and your browser and device details; and
Any other information, content, or metadata you choose to provide or that is generated, attached, or recorded in the course of your submission or your interactions with us.

Providing this information is voluntary, but some of it is necessary for us to respond to you, sign you up, or accept a contribution. Technical information such as your IP address is recorded automatically with form submissions to help us prevent spam and abuse and to keep an accurate record of what was submitted.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, certain information is collected automatically by your browser or device, including your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring website, the pages you view, the links and buttons you click, the date and time of your visit, how long you spend on each page, and general location information such as city or region derived from your IP address. This information helps us understand how the Site is used, keep it secure and working properly, and improve it.

Information from third parties

We may receive information about you from social media platforms (for example, when you comment on, message, or interact with our pages), from advertising and analytics platforms (often in in aggregated or de-identified form), from publicly available sources such as voters lists and public records, and from people who refer you to us or endorse alongside you.

Cookies and tracking technologies

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies — including pixels, tags, web beacons, local storage, and software development kits — to operate the Site, remember your preferences, measure traffic and performance, and similar uses.

These technologies include:

Essential cookies, which are required for the Site and its forms to function;
Analytics cookies and tools, such as Google Analytics, which help us understand how visitors find and use the Site; and
Advertising and measurement cookies and pixels, such as the Meta (Facebook and Instagram) pixel and similar tools from other advertising platforms, which help us show campaign ads to people in and around Huntsville, measure how those ads perform, and avoid showing the same ad too often.

Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies through their settings, and mobile devices generally offer advertising controls such as limiting ad tracking. Some parts of the Site may not work properly if you disable cookies. You can also manage some advertising preferences directly with the platforms — for example through your Meta ad preferences, Google's ad settings, or industry opt-out pages such as YourAdChoices Canada.

Advertising and social media

We advertise on social media and search platforms, including Meta (Facebook and Instagram), and we may use other platforms such as Google, YouTube, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, or Nextdoor. As part of this, we may:

Use pixels and conversion tracking to measure the results of our ads;
Create custom audiences by securely providing a platform with contact information, such as hashed email addresses, so that our ads can be shown to people who have already told us they support the campaign;
Create lookalike or similar audiences so our ads can reach other residents who resemble our supporters; and
Retarget people who have visited the Site with follow-up campaign messages.

These platforms process information under their own privacy policies and terms, which we do not control. We encourage you to review them.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

Respond to your questions, messages, and requests;
Contact you by email, phone, text message, mail, or in person about the campaign, including news, events, volunteer opportunities, voting information, and requests for support or contributions;
Organize and coordinate volunteers, canvassing, events, and lawn signs;
Process, record, and report contributions as required by law;
Publish endorsements you have submitted for that purpose;
Understand the issues that matter to residents and shape the campaign's platform and communications;
Plan, target, deliver, and measure advertising and outreach;
Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site;
Prevent fraud, abuse, and misuse of the Site;
Stay in touch with you after the election, including, if Michael is elected, about Town business, local issues, and constituent matters; and
Comply with legal and regulatory obligations, including those under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (Ontario).

Endorsements and public content

If you submit an endorsement, you are giving us permission to publish it. We may publish your endorsement, your name, your general location (such as your neighbourhood or ward), and your title or affiliation or local notoriety, on the Site, in printed materials, in advertising, and on social media. We review endorsements before publishing and may edit them for length, clarity, or accuracy. If you later want your endorsement removed, contact us through our contact page and we will remove it from materials we control going forward.

Comments and messages you post publicly on our social media pages are visible to others and are governed by that platform's policies as well as this one.

How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as described below:

With the campaign team. Michael, and authorized volunteers may access your information to do work such as responding to you, organizing volunteers, and reaching out to residents. Volunteers are directed to keep this information confidential and to use it only for campaign purposes.
With service providers. We use third-party providers to host the Site, deliver and manage forms and email, process contributions, run analytics, and deliver advertising. They may process your information on our behalf and are expected to protect it and use it only for the services they provide to us.
With advertising platforms, as described in the sections on cookies and advertising above.
As required by law. Contributions to municipal campaigns in Ontario are subject to public reporting requirements. Under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, the name and address of each contributor who gives more than the prescribed amount must be filed with the Town of Huntsville in the campaign's financial statement, and those filings are public records. We may also disclose information where required by law, subpoena, court order, or lawful request from a public authority, or where necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of the campaign or others.
With your consent, or at your direction, for any other purpose.

Where your information is stored

We use third-party service providers to host the Site and to handle forms, email, contributions, analytics, and advertising. These providers may store, access, or process your information outside Ontario and outside Canada.

Information stored or processed in another country may be subject to the laws of that country. By providing us with your information, you consent to this transfer, storage, access, and processing wherever it takes place.

How long we keep your information

We retain your personal information for as long as it is needed for the purposes described in this Policy, and afterwards where we have a legal, record-keeping, or communications reason to do so. Campaign financial records must be kept as required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

We keep your information so that we can stay in touch with the people who connected with us. If Michael is elected, this may include contacting you as a resident of Huntsville about local issues, Town business, community news, constituent matters, and future campaigns. You can ask us to stop contacting you, or to delete your information, at any time.

Your choices and your rights

Unsubscribe. You may unsubscribe from communications at any time. If you are unsure how to do so, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
Access and correction. You may ask what personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct anything that is inaccurate.
Deletion. You may ask us to delete your personal information by contacting us through our contact page. We will delete it within a reasonable time, except where we are required to keep it — for example, contribution records that must be retained and reported under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 — and except for information already published, distributed, or held by advertising platforms, which we may not be able to fully recall.
Withdraw consent. You may withdraw your consent to our use of your information at any time, subject to legal restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may mean we can no longer keep you informed about the campaign.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the information you give us, including using reputable service providers and limiting access to people who need it. No method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children's privacy

The Site is intended for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it. Young people old enough to volunteer are welcome to get involved, and we ask that they have a parent or guardian's permission before signing up.

Links to other websites

The Site may contain links to other websites and platforms that we do not operate, including social media, news coverage, and Town of Huntsville pages. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of every site you visit.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised Policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date above. Changes are effective when they are posted. You are advised to review this Policy periodically for any changes. Your continued use of the Site after a change is posted means you accept the updated Policy.
